Abstract: Grid is one of the key components for electrochemical performance and practical applications of lead-acid batteries (LABs). In the effort to increase LABs’ energy density and prolong cycle life, weight reduction of the lead grid is required. Some lightweight metals, alloys, and their associated new grid structures have been recognized to be the promising alternatives to lead. In this paper, the advantages and disadvantages of these types of alternative grids and structures are reviewed and analyzed. For overcoming the challenges hindering the commercialization, several research directions are also proposed to facilitate the research and development of lightweight grids for lead-acid batteries.
