Abstract: Electroslag remelting, as an important link in the production of high-end equipment materials such as special steels, is a secondary refining technology that integrates the removal of inclusions and optimization of solidified microstructure. However, with the increase of ingot size, large electroslag ingots generally have common problems such as low purity, poor homogeneity and coarse solidified microstructure/carbides. In recent years, the use of applied magnetic field to regulate the refining and solidification process in electroslag remelting has received extensive attentions from many researchers. This paper mainly combines the research results of the group in recent years and focuses on the multi-stage enhancement of inclusions removal by magnetic-controlled electroslag remelting, solidified microstructure /carbide refinement by magnetic-controlled electroslag remelting, industrial practice of magneticcontrolled electroslag remelting technology, etc. The mechanism of the applied magnetic field to improve the purity and homogeneity of electroslag ingots is explained, and the future directions and research focus are also proposed.
