With humanity coming up on 2012, should we worry about end of the world 2012 predictions? After a general introduction to Maya astronomy, Maya calendar is introduced in detail for the origin of the prediction that the world will end in 2012. In the author’s eyes, nothing bad will happen to the Earth in 2012 and December 21, 2012 is the end of the Maya longcount period but then another longcount period begins for the Maya calendar.

Measuring the Galactic rotation curve is of very importance for solving a number of astrophysical problems, such as estimating the total mass of the Galaxy, determining the distribution of matter, exploring dark mater, etc. It has been shown from almost all of studies on the Galactic rotation curve that the rotation curve of the outer Galaxy is roughly flat or appears to rise slightly from the Sun’s location to the heliocentric distance of 20 kpc.

Ecological security means not only the survival stability but also development sustainability, not only the safety of environmental structure but also the harmony of ecological relationship. Ecosystem services are the conditions and processing through which natural ecosystems, and the species that make them up, sustain and fulfill human life. They not only supply to human with the production of ecosystem goods, such as food, forage, timber, biomass fuels, natural fiber, and pharmaceuticals. Ecosystems also perform fundamental lifesupport services, which include the purification of air and water, detoxification and decomposition of wastes, regulation of climate, regeneration of soil fertility, and production and maintenance of biodiversity, mitigation of floods, droughts, the erosive forces of wind and rain. Ecological security is the extension and expansion of sustainable development. Ecological security is the method of protection of ecosystem services and ecosystem services is the index of ecological security. The purpose of ecological security is maintaining the normal development of the ecosystem functions to ensure human wellbeing. With the rapid growth of global population and rapid social and economic development, the sharp increase in demand for ecosystem services, ecosystem services are degraded .It becomes an important factor of the serious constraints of sustainable socioeconomic development. Explore the ecosystem services and ecological security becomes a very urgent task. This paper analyzed ecological security, and explored the core issues of ecosystem services and human wellbeing and ecological security.

Landscape pattern and ecological process are the major contents of landscape ecology. The close interactions between landscape patter and ecological process created landscape function, which constituted the bulk of ecosystem services. Due to everincreasing influence of human being on natural resources and environment, the ecosystems are confronted by tough challenges embodied by structural damages and functional disorders. This article discusses the couplings between landscape pattern and ecological process, the effects on ecosystem services, and their application in ecosystem management.

Being smoothly operated for 5 years, the ARGO-YBJ experiment collected 0.4 trillion cosmic ray event samples. Many scientific goals have been achieved based on the very important data base. Here in this article, we summarize all major contributions to cosmic ray related researches, including conventional measurements such as cosmic ray energy spectrum, composition and anisotropy. The researches also cover many nontraditional topics such as the monitoring of solar activity using Galactic cosmic rays, forecasting large geomagnetic storms induced by huge flares of the sun, exploring the correlation between thunderstorms and extensives air shower of cosmic rays and so forth. With the progresses of the future experiment LHAASO, all researches reported in this paper will be greatly enhanced using the most sensitive new generation apparatus. Breakthrough may be expected in some of the topics. 

Cultural transmission is one of three foundations of studying animal behavior. Cultural transmission can allow newly acquired traits to spread through populations at a very quick rate, as well as permit the rapid transmission of information across generations. We shall examine three different modes of cultural transmission: vertical, horizontal and oblique transmission. Researchers found that across more than 100 species of primates, there was a significant positive correlation between brain size and both innovation and tooluse frequency.

The long evolutionary way for human can be traced back to about 5 million years ago, in which two “missing links”,  Ardipithecus ramidus and Australopithecus sediba, have been validated. There are two conflicted hypotheses, “out of Africa” and multiregional origins. At present, the mixture of both hypotheses seems to be more valuable according to Neanderthal and Denisovan genome draft and other data. The ultimate explanation for being human is focused on the culturemaking brain, especially in the cerebral hemisphere asymmetry, that bolsters the framework for 4 graded languages and 3 types of world.
